Pixel Buds Pro 2 Hands-On: Are They Finally Better Than AirPods Pro?

With the second-generation Pixel Buds Pro, Google isn’t just playing catch-up anymore. They’re aiming directly at Apple’s AirPods Pro dominance with upgraded ANC, deeper Google Assistant integration, spatial audio, and improved fit. But talk is cheap — how do they actually feel and sound in daily use?

I spent the last week putting the Pixel Buds Pro 2 through their paces, from coffee shop chaos to video calls and gym sessions. Here’s what stood out.

Sound Quality: Balanced with AI Tricks

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 deliver a very clean and well-balanced sound profile. Google’s new 11mm drivers produce punchy bass, clean mids, and bright highs without distorting — even at high volume.

There’s also a new adaptive sound profile that uses AI to auto-adjust based on your surroundings. It works well, though subtle — you’ll notice it most when moving from a quiet room to a busy street.

Compared to AirPods Pro 2, the Pixel Buds are slightly warmer in tone, while Apple leans more clinical and neutral. It’ll come down to your taste, but I honestly preferred Google’s EQ when listening to pop and podcasts.

ANC & Transparency: Surprisingly Strong

This is where the Buds Pro 2 genuinely surprised me. The active noise cancellation is significantly better than the first gen — cutting out background hums and voices very effectively.

I tested them on a noisy bus, and while AirPods Pro still had a tiny edge in isolating higher-pitched sounds, the Pixel Buds came dangerously close — and beat them for wind resistance.

Transparency mode is also vastly improved. Voices sound more natural than in Gen 1, though Apple’s “Conversation Boost” still handles it more dynamically.

Google AI & Features: Assistant at Its Best

One of the biggest selling points: Google’s AI integration. The hands-free “Hey Google” wake phrase, coupled with real-time translation, adaptive volume, and reading notifications aloud, makes these feel like an actual smart wearable.

The real-time translation feature (tested with Spanish) worked fast and fluid. It’s not perfect, but if you travel, this feature alone is a standout.

Fit, Battery & Case: Better in Every Way

The Buds Pro 2 come with redesigned eartips and slightly more ergonomic contours. They stayed in during workouts and long walks — no slippage.

Battery life is solid:

  • ~8 hours with ANC
  • ~11 hours without
  • The case gives you about 2 full recharges
You’ll also find USB-C, wireless charging, and Fast Pair for Android.

Bottom Line: Finally a Real AirPods Pro Rival

So — are they better than the AirPods Pro?

In some areas: yes.

  • Sound: Slight edge to Google for richness
  • ANC: Close race, Apple’s still slightly ahead
  • Smart Features: Pixel wins hands-down with Assistant & translation
  • Fit & Price: About even — though Pixel Buds Pro 2 are usually $20–$30 cheaper

If you’re an Android user, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are easily the best you can buy right now. For iPhone users? AirPods Pro still edge out on seamless iOS integration. But if Google keeps this up, AirPods’ reign might be nearing its end.
